Located just south of Parsippany is the Morristown National Historical Park, which is part of the region of NJ known as “The Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area.” The park designates where Washington and the brave but freezing and nearly starving Continental Army spent the winters of 1777-78 and the “cold hard winter” of 1779-80. The bucolic beauty of this town is so serene, you might think you’ve been transported to the British countryside. Rolling green fields make their way down to lush riverbanks, all perfect for exploring on hikes or bike rides.

The beginning of the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park is here as well. The towpath meanders south from Frenchtown -- a great strolling and shopping town, with numerous small charming boutiques and ongoing -- for a bit before it hits the canal itself. From here, bicyclists can pedal along the Delaware River all the way to Trenton. Or, follow the Raritan River until it hits New Brunswick. If you didn’t bring your own bike, Cycle Corner (52 Bridge St.) is a top spot in the region for bike rentals.

Then there's the Delaware Water Gap. Located in the northwest corner of New Jersey, the park runs along 40 miles of the Delaware River, including where it cuts through a ridge in the Appalachian Mountains to form the celebrated “gap.” This lush national park contains waterfalls, top-notch rock climbing, 200 historic sites and 100 miles of hiking trails including more than 27 miles of the famed Appalachian Trail.  The park is a magnet for kayak, rafting and tubing enthusiasts. Delaware River Family Campground (100 Rt. 46) runs canoe, kayak and rafting trips right at the Water Gap. They also rent canoes and rowboats and have cabins and campsites.  For anglers, there’s fishing for shad, smallmouth bass and catfish, among others. Try your hand at trout fishing at two hot spots – Flat Brook and Van Campens Brook. There are some great roads in the Gap area that will really put your SAAB to the test.

Just up the road from the Hilton Parsippany along Route 10 is the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms. This 30-acre National Historic Landmark is the centerpiece of Gustav Stickley’s early 20th century country estate, known as Craftsman Farms.  Stickley was a major figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement who combined the roles of designer, manufacturer, architect, publisher, philosopher, and social critic.  The Arts and Crafts movement represented more than a beautiful sense of style, design and craftsmanship. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays 11 AM – 4 PM and weekdays in August from Noon – 3:00 PM.
