Track Day at Nelson Ledges

The Saab Club of North America will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Longest Day at Nelson victory by holding its annual owners convention in Aurora from July 22-25.

The festivities will commence with an optional track day at Nelson Ledges on Thursday July 22, where attendees will have the opportunity to drive on the very course where SAAB's turbocharged 900 showed its stuff to the country.

View a drive around the track from the driver's seat and download a PDF of the track map at the Nelson Ledges site!

We will be generally following the Nelson Ledges "FunDays" rules (see "Driving Rules" in the menu on the left). FunDays were created for the amateur sports car enthusiast; low performance cars and club racers -- people that have always wanted to experience the thrill of "On Track" driving but in a safe, controlled atmosphere.

There will be a tech inspection where wheel lug torque and general vehicle condition will be assessed (battery hold down in place, fluids at proper levels and not overtly disgusting, tires not cracking, bulged, or cords showing, adequate tread depth if track is wet, no loose items in passenger compartment).

Participants will be divided into groups based on vehicle performance and driver experience.

We are also pleased to welcome David Wolfe, crew chief on the Nelson Ledges winning 900 auto, as our special guest at SOC2010. He will be at the Track Event and will give a short talk on the Longest Day activities at the Thursday evening Sponsor Dinner. Please see David's bio below and to the right.

David Wolfe Bio

The following was provided by Ed Smith who located David Wolfe after not being in touch for many years.

“David was crew chief on several of the SCCA race cars, especially the Nelson Ledges winning car. On page 122 of the book 'From Two-Stroke to Turbo' by Anders Tunberg there is a side shot of the winning car with all of their names on the side of the car. Complete SAAB Woodstock, GA is shown as the main sponsor. David took over the Complete SAAB repair shop in Woodstock, GA from Coke Ellott who had the SAAB franchise and sold it to the people who started SAAB Atlanta. The race cars were headquartered out of the Woodstock shop, this was a fully factory effort. I vintage raced with David for several years. I met David in the early 80's when I was trying to hot rod my 81' 900 turbo. David built me a motor and added some other special touches he got close to 300 hp out of that 8 valve motor. He was a 'hired gun' for one of the vintage teams. This meant he did not have to sleep on the trailer floor and he got his hot dogs free and did not have to pay to drive. David is a SAAB master tech and has been one for a number of years. He works for Shaw SAAB in the Denver, CO area. David is a fun guy and a reformed 'wild man' I know he is reformed because he ask his wife if it was ok to go to the SOC. The 'THE OLD' David didn't ask permission to do anything from anybody.”
